Croatian fascist Leader on Summer Label

A wine producer in Siroki Brijeg, a predominantly Croat population town in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is selling wine bottles called Poglavnik, the title used by Croatian fascist leader Ante Pavelic. Bozo Pinjuh, owner of the wine workshop “Zlatna klitica” in Siroki Brijeg, told BIRN that he sells wine in Croatia, but only in small amounts about 1,000 bottles a year and through private orders.

Bottle labels have a picture of Paveliqi, “Poglavnik” a title similar to Duce in fascist Italy or the Fuhrer in Nazi Germany.

Pinjuh said he has been selling wine for 15 years and that he has never faced problems, even though his Poglavnik product has been reported by Croatian media.

“I'm registered, I have documents,” said Pinjuh.

Bosnian law has no definition of what a fascist organisation is, and the use of fascist symbols is not prohibited in the country.

In late September, a client at the Bracera restaurant in the coastal town of Malinska complained that the Poglavnik wines were on sale there.

“Sumption is fine, prices are normal, waiters are polite, however, in a very visible place in the restaurant there are bottles of wine in which the Poglavnik is written, below which is a photo of Ante Paveliqi,” wrote the client, Djurdica Ciq, in an assessment on Google.

I am now writing here and then I will contact the Croatian police and the Malisska municipality's tourist council. Shame on you if you don't know whose picture you have in the restaurant and if you know, then you should be put in jail,” added Cilic.

Cilic said she wrote to the police, complaining that the Poglavnik wine bottles were a violation of Croatian law on public order.

Police responded that they visited the restaurant and that “had no elements of the concern of peace and public order,” said Cilic.

When contacted by BIRN, the restaurant refused to give comments.

Between 1941 and 1945, the Independent State of Croatia led by the Ustashes of Pavelic adopted Nazi racist laws and persecuted Serbs, Jews, Roma and Croatian anti-fascists.

According to an official list compiled by name, 83,145 victims of the regime were killed at the main concentration camp in Jasenovac.

In August 2015, wartime Croatian General Branimir Glavas, who is being tried for war crimes, posted photos on Facebook where he had come up with bottles of wine bearing Adolf Hitler's picture on the label.

Wines resembled the bottles with Hitler on the label Vina Lunardel, which have been sharply criticised by Simon Wiessenthal Centre.
