A group of divers has found a physical link between two large underwater caves in Mexico, with the discovery of the sperm complex believed to be the largest underwater cave system in the world.
Reuters writes that the discovery is even more important, as it provides additional details of ancient Maya civilisation.
The divers were taken several months to investigate and make a complex map to reach a total of 347 miles [347 km] of underwater passages.
The key moment was when natural tunnels were found in the tourist center of Tullum linking the Sac Actun cave system, whose length is 263 miles [263 km], with the Dos Oyos system, at a length of 83 miles [83 km]. Divers found many bones and objects related to various aspects of ancient Maya life by studying the system, Kosovo Press broadcasts.
The Yukatan Peninsula is generally very rich in monuments of Maya civilization, whose cities lie stretched out on a rich network of abysses leading to underground watercourses. Some of these Maya caves were of great religious importance.
