Turkish ground troops have moved to northern Syria as part of a major offensive to suppress Kurdish militia, which Turkey considers terrorist.
The Kurdish group, known as the YPG, is active in the Africa region, across Turkey's southern border. Militia is an important part of a US-backed alliance, struggling with the jihadists of the Islamic State (IS) in Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has pledged to press YPG “too quickly”, but the US is advising the Turkish government not to undertake military offensive to avoid civilian victims.
Turkey believes the group is linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a banned militant group, while the US itself would support YPG's opinion that they are not terrorists but are obstructing I SIS spread to those areas. The Turkish government has threatened several months to clear Kurdish fighters from Africa and another Manbij town, about 100km away.
