Undaunted by the 6 degree cellcius air temperature and the equally cold water, 4,500 people, mostly in ridiculous dress, ran across the beach at the side of the city's neoclassic royal galleries.
While some dared not go further than wet the ankles, others also benefited from the presence of many beach guards, making a full push in the freezing waters.
Organisers say the 27th edition of the New Year's dive is acceptable to temperature and participation, after an extremely cold edition in 2017 when the stinging wind brought temperatures below zero.
