These statements came Friday after the US called an emergency meeting at the UN Security Council to discuss the deadly protests that began in late December in Iran, reports “Al Jazeera”, Periscopi broadcast.
“The US is abusing the Security Council platform. Let Iran itself solve its problems,” Russia's ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, said.
The real reason for today's gathering is not to protect human rights or promote the interests of the Iranian people, but a hidden attempt to continue to undermine the Iranian nuclear agreement,” he said.
Envoys from several other countries from China to Equatorial Guinea also expressed reservations about whether the council was a suitable forum on the issue.
Protests have lasted almost a week, leaving at least 22 people dead.. /Periscopi/
