Kosovars are now facing extreme air pollution for weeks, thus exceeding 300 times the average of allowed pollution. This pollution is causing serious damage to Kosovars' health, but there are also many problems in relevant health institutions. The number of those seeking medical help during the last days as a result of pollution is considerable. The Pulmology Clinic does not even have sufficient capacity, including clinic beds, to accept all patients. The current situation is being described as alarming by Kosovo doctors, because the number of patients has doubled in recent days.
If you are overwhelmed, you have a fever, cough, and bulges, you should immediately visit your doctor. These symptoms have many Kosovars in recent days as a result of extreme air pollution.
Feride Krasniqi had gone to Pulmology Clinic during the day. During a conversation about Gazette Express, she reports that she suffers from diabetes, but recently she has had several respiratory problems. Feridya is convinced that these problems are coming from contaminated air.
These days I'm not feeling well. I went to my doctor today and visited, but he suggested that I come here. I have sugar disease, but I'm getting breathing lately. Doctors say it's dirty air. I was suggested not to go out, except on emergencies, on these days”, says 46-year-old from Pristina.
The number of patients seeking medical help over the last few days at the Pulmology Clinic on the part of the clinic's officials is considered very large. They say that the cases of the sick have doubled with symptoms of air pollution in the country.
Dr. Rukie Mehmetin, a counterpart at the University Clinical Centre in Kosovo.
She says the Pulmology clinic does not have enough capacity to accept all patients who are seeking medical services these days as a result of air pollution.
I can say that the number of clinic patients, not only of ambulance visits, but also of the extended has doubled. Continued demand for checkups and scope for treatment has doubled. It's a disaster we don't have enough access to medical services right now, we have enough beds to accommodate all these sick people, Mehmet says.
The doctor also shows that the most endangered patients are those with chronic lung disease.
The patients are especially coming for chronic lung diseases, asthma, bronze, coming daily with a heavier state of”.
Pulmologist Mehmet also suggests that children are affected by contaminated air. The number has even increased these days.
Even children are affected, that even the number of children is adults who are affected by environmental pollution. What's worse, we've got the flu dipping, which has made it worse. All of these are cases that require hospitalization, the biggest treatments”, explains Pulmology doctor.
Pulmology clinic currently has only 68 beds, which is insufficient to accommodate all patients in need.
“Conditions, lack of therapy, lack of beds. The number of all beds is 68. But in this period of seasonal flu and contaminated air, the need for beds is extremely large”, Mehmeti says.
According to the Talmudologist, the most endangered by air pollution in Pristina are the elderly, chronically ill, and those who receive cancer therapy.
Some 300 young patients with chronic obtrusive diseases have been diagnosed in the Pulmology Clinic at QKUK over the past year. All of this, according to clinic doctors, has resulted from the heavy industry that applies to Kosovo.
Air pollution has added to the number of patients at the QKUK's Infectious Clinic. There, according to director Hamdi Ramadani, the number of people with seasonal flu is on the rise.
Ramadani declared on Monday for Express that air pollution has also burdened the situation with flu.
After air pollution in the capital and elsewhere, during today the Public Health Institute has also proposed that environmental inspectors make rigorous control of the air filters at thermal power plants during 24 hours, as well as the quality of fuels and the consumption of fossil fuels used for heating by citizens.
The institute has also appealed to citizens to reduce city exits and air pollution, especially in the morning and evening, and especially from chronic diseases of cardiovascular and respiratory systems, children and pregnant women.
From the last measurement made by the Centre for measuring air quality established by the American Embassy in Pristina at 2: 00 p.m., the value of pollution has reached 185, considered very unhealthy.
