A Japanese soldier has been killed by an avalanche in central Japan apparently caused by a volcanic eruption. At least 14 people have also been hurt, some in critical situations.
Volcanal exfil caused rocks to fall down over a vast area near Kusatsu in Japan.
Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, 150km from Tokyo, erupted Tuesday, but it was not confirmed whether it was the one who caused the avalanche.
The explosion on Mount Kusatsu-Shirane, 150km from Tokyo, is thought to have caused an avalanche, catching some skiers on a slope.
Six army soldiers who were training were among them.
Most of them were injured, and one of them died later.
Japan's land defence babies (SDF) and were conducting winter exercises, according to Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera.
Four people who had boarded the gondola in the restaurant were among the injured. At least 78 skiers are still trapped in a holiday house on top of the mountain, according to a local city official.
Japan's Meteorological Agency has warned people not to climb the mountain.
