Rescue teams crashed into thick mud in southern California on Wednesday to extract stranded residents and free roads that became impassable by the slides that have left at least 15 people dead and destroyed about 100 homes.
Tens of people have disappeared, and about 28 others have been injured by slides that occurred after a fire in northwest Los Angeles.

Authorities are working to get 300 people trapped in their homes.
One official has suggested that the area covered by flames has reached as many as 20,000 hectares of land.
