The late leader of the SDP Civic Initiative, Oliver Ivanovic, had stated months ago that the security situation in the northern part of Mitrovica is not good.

However, he had said, the citizens' fear of this situation comes from Serbs, not Albanians.

“Yes, the situation has changed for bad. The feeling of deterioration, fear in the people is incredible. Of the 100 people I've talked to in the first few weeks of freedom, there's not one that in the first words has not settled the security issue. Let's get right away. Those people aren't afraid of Albanians, but Serbs, of local cabadains and criminals who drive without a license plate. Drugs are sold everywhere, every parent fears it. There have been such things in the past, but not to this extent, and those people have not acted so presumptuously. Police see all of this and do not react, and thus citizens feel vulnerable, even though the Kosovo Police in the north are all our people, Serbs. Some of them are experienced policemen who previously worked for Serbia's MUP, but neither are they doing anything”, Ivanovic had declared the magazine “Vreme” in Belgrade on September 28th of last year.
