Deputy Prime Minister and former Kosovo Foreign Minister Enver Hoxhaj has said that the membership of the Republic of Kosovo in the Council of Europe would pave the way for citizens of the country to have access to many European mechanisms through which human rights and freedoms are protected.
According to him, membership in this organisation is linked to the successful implementation of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the European Union, as well as the application process for EU membership candidate status.
Euro-membership in the Council of Europe paves the way for Kosovo for membership in the Bologna Process, which would result with the improvement and regional integration of Kosovo education. Currently, being outside the Council of Europe is imperiling Kosovo citizens' access to European mechanisms for protection and promotion of human rights. One of these mechanisms is the Court for Human Rights in Strasbourg, where our citizens can't access it precisely because of not being a member of the Council of Europe. We have institutional co-operation with the institutions of the Council of Europe and their presence in Kosovo, including the Parliamentary Assembly, as well as the Bank for Development and the Venice Commission, of which Kosovo is already part. Therefore, Kosovo's membership would also be in the interest of the Council of Europe, because it would enable them to expand their activities to promote democracy, human rights and rule of law”, Hoxhaj has said of the news.net.
While, Foreign Minister Behgjet Pacolli days ago at the Government meeting, he has announced that he has formed a working team for Kosovo's application to the Council of Europe.
He has said that among the 11 members of this group are experts from civil society. According to him, in a short time Kosovo will also officially apply for membership in this organisation.
Kosovo has so far joined some of the important organisations, while in 2017 Kosovo has joined the World Customs Organisation as well.
