The European Union is launching a diplomatic effort to speed up steps to bring six Western Balkan countries to the EU after years of halting progress, Periscopi broadcasts.
“It is time to finish the work of 1989,” told “Reuters” Commissioner for Europe Johannes Hahn, referring to Eastern Europe after the Berlin Wall was broken.
“We have set 2025 as an index date for Serbia and Montenegro, which is realistic but also very ambitious. ”
Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia all hope to join the European Union have seen their membership prospects in recent years, as the bloc's politicians, faced with increasing Euroscepticism in the country, the Eurozone crisis 2009-2013 and Britain's vote to leave the bloc, seem to lose interest.
But boosting Russia's influence, the migration crisis dominates the region, moving Turkey into an authoritarian state and wishing for a weaker Europe after Britain's 2019 exit has given the Balkans an opportunity.
“O we export stability to the region or import instability,” said Hahn, arguing that the EU accession process was the best way to fight corruption, organised crime and the threat of authoritarianism in the region. /Periscopi/
