The ambassador of the United States of America to Kosovo, Greg Delaway, said today that Kosovo must take over responsibilities to close a chapter which the Special Court is tasked with.
In a statement to the media, as a last warning to MPs' initiative to abolish the Special Court, the US diplomat said that if this initiative goes to the end, then this “would turn Kosovo back”.
Delawi's statement took place an hour before the head of the Kosovo Assembly meets to review the application of 43 deputies for the extraordinary session, held on 22 December.
The Special Court interests us because we want to see Kosovo join NATO and the EU. If you want to join the group you must follow the rules of the group. The Special Repower would turn Kosovo back”, Delawi said.
He said Kosovo's justice is not yet prepared to address allegations of crimes committed, for which this court was established in August 2015, through a law adopted in the Kosovo Assembly.
Kosovo must close this chapter in its history, even if it means we should take certain former soldiers to task. You can tell why justice won't do it here. We have invested in Kosovo's justice but has not yet shown capacity to take this responsibility”, he added.
Delawie said Kosovo's commitment to bringing justice has been placed “under serious threat” at the initiative of 43 MPs, two of whom have withdrawn firms in the meantime.
This represents a terrible case where personal interests are above state. MPs supporting this initiative will face consequences and they know this because we told them this”, Delawi said.
