The European Commission today gave a 10-day deadline for nine countries considered as bad “students of the European Union in terms of air quality, including France, Germany and Great Britain, to present new measures to improve air quality and avoid being sent to European justice.
“Commissioner Carmeni Brother has set a deadline for member states by the end of next week to complete their files to avoid an appearance before the European Court of Justice”, European executive spokesman Margaritis Schinas stressed.
Brother, the European Commissioner for Environment called nine member states to Brussels this morning, including France, Germany and Great Britain, several times warned of overstepping rates on pollution emissions and under threat of a lawsuit at the European Court of Justice.
The only thing that can stop the Commission from addressing the Court is if member states will present enough measures to achieve their goals in a short time --”, Brother said at the end of the meeting.
Air pollution has been deemed responsible for the deaths of more than 400,000 people a year in the EU, not counting on Europeans affected by respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.
The nine countries called Germany, Spain, France, Hungary, Italy, the Czech Republic, Romania, Great Britain and Slovakia regularly pass limits for air pollution emissions for several years.
