Blair: EU Can Restore Britain

Former British leader Tony Blair says in an interview for Euronews that the European Union should show leadership during Brexit and if it faces the fundamental problems of the European project, then Great Britain can stay in the bloc. Brexit, it should be Europe's opportunity to deal with some of the fundamental issues that citizens [...] are dealing with.

Brexit, it should be Europe's opportunity to confront some of the fundamental issues European citizens have with the European project. The former lab prime minister, a vocal critic of British plans to secede from the European Union, went beyond the overall perspective in Brussels that Brex is Britain's mainly problem.

I give a powerful message to European leaders. They must show leadership in this situation. The truth is that all the concerns that have surfaced in Britain, which led to Brex, could also surface in any other European country, simply in Britain occurred that a referendum was held on the position or exit from the EU”, he said. In his interview, where he also spoke of President Donald Trump and the Middle East, Blair said Britain's exit from the EU could harm the bloc economically and politically and challenged European leaders to undertake initiatives to make reforms that would keep Britain in the club.

If Brexit goes to the end, Europe will be reduced as entities, lose a large economy and a heavy political player. Europe will be weaker. But Brexit should be an opportunity for Europe to face some fundamental issues for all citizens. And if this is done, then we can find a way for Britain to stay in the” block, he said.

Blair anyway identified no specific problem. His critics charge he is partly guilty of failing to address the problems leading to Brex, as EU rules on free movement. Under his leadership, Great Britain opened the doors to employees from new EU member states earlier than needed after the 2004 enlargement.
