In a regional analysis, the European Commission stresses that it is working for a new strategy for the Western Balkans, while urging countries to seize the chance for their European perspective.
EC spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said 2018 was the year of opportunity for Balkan countries to take irreversible steps on the road to European integration.
However, Kocijancic stressed that reforms must be undertaken to achieve that goal, especially in the areas of rule of law, justice and fundamental rights.
” The EU will not compromise the terms of membership. Any serious progress is a condition for effective reform”, she explained.
In analysis dedicated to Albania, the EU believes” Albania has shown a steady performance in all five key priorities aimed at moving forward into EU integration, reform in public administration, reform in justice, fighting organised crime and corruption, and human rights”.
“is currently implementing justice reform and in particular the property of judges and prosecutors. This process is monitored by an International Monitoring Operation headed by the European Commission”, Kocijancic said.
The report underlined that, as EU President Jean-Claude Juncker stressed, “if it continues on the path to reforms, the Commission aims to recommend opening membership negotiations for the country within the next six months”.
