The percentage of violent crimes, including serious attacks and murder, rose for the second consecutive year in the United States last year.
The number of violent crimes reported in police departments increased 4.1 percent in 2016, as it rose 3.3 percent in 2015, according to annual FBI statistics.
The Justice Department said in a statement that the change represented the greatest “achievement in a year in terms of the degree of violent crimes since 1991”.
However, this level remains lower than historical records, as the 2016 rate is 12.3 percent lower than that of 2007, according to FBI data.
17 thousand and 250 Americans were killed last year, marking an 8.6 percent increase compared to a year ago.
