A later investigation revealed that parental identities labels at the Canadian hospital had been accidentally changed.
Families say they are still “overwhelmed by questions about what their life would have been”.
Leon Swanson and David Tait Jr discovered last August that they were confused from the hospital in 1975.
DNA testing confirmed that they were sent home with each other's biological parents shortly after birth. They know each other and continue to live in House Cree Nation, a community of about 5,000 people.
The same was true of Luke Monica and Norman Barcman, of the Garden Hill First Nation.
Canadian police have ruled that they will not file a lawsuit against the hospital that switched four babies during the seventy years, a story that made headlines throughout the country. The hospital staff called it a unfortunate “axident”.
After the shifts were made public, the federal health department launched an independent investigation. In Canada, health care is generally managed by the province. Meanwhile, four babies had lived in the same province, so close to their parents, not knowing that they were growing from the wrong family. / SYRI.net/
