The Court of Appeals in Ancona, Italy, has granted rights to an Albanian citizen, sentenced to 14 years in prison for murder, who after the end of his sentence is offered international protection for humanitarian reasons.
The Ancona Court of Appeals ruling argues that the person in question whose identity is not made public is at risk in Albania because of Canun and therefore the Italian state should offer protection.
He has been sentenced along with six other people, including Albanians, for killing a fellow traveler on Christmas Eve in 2002.
But after the sentence ended, Albanian and his lawyer, Paolo Cogni, known for protecting asylum seekers' rights, have turned to the first-degree Court in Ancona, which rejected their request for international protection. But, the Court of Appeals, in its ruling, refers literally to the Canun and the dangers its return to Albania. Under these conditions, three Court of Appeals judges have decided that Albanian citizens will be offered protection on humanitarian issues. / TCH/
