State Secretary Rex Tillerson says President Donald Trump has empowered American commanders in Afghanistan to make decisions based on the situation on the ground. That, he says, will change the dynamics of the longest war in the United States. As the following material knows, the chief of American diplomacy acknowledges that this may be a war that the United States cannot win only on the battlefield.
President Donald Trump's strategy for the war in Afghanistan has won strong support from American diplomacy chief Rex Tillerson, who says it will not be based on artificial timelines, but on ground conditions:
“Fighting will be carried out by Afghan forces. But we believe that we will change the direction of what has been a losing battle over the past 18 months and at least stabilise the situation. ”
But Mr. Tillerson admits that even this new approach may not bring full military victory, calling on the Taliban to attend the negotiating table:
The president was clear, all this effort intended to pressure the Taliban, which they would not win on the battlefield. We may not win, but neither will they. ”
Mr. Tillerson agrees with the president that Afghanistan's complex problems can only be solved through a regional approach, including India and Pakistan. But he said Pakistan should change its approach to terrorists. Some analysts agree, as is David Sedney, who spoke of American Voice Urdu service:
“Pakistan must take decisive steps not to allow the leadership of the Taliban group to meet there. Stop passing weapons from Pakistan to Afghanistan. Now, Pakistan knows it can't last anymore. ”
While the other analyst, William Goodfellw, said yes to the Urdu service of the Voice of America that he sees no major changes in the strategy in Afghanistan.
The reason they're adding troops is because they're worried the Taliban have the initiative while the U.S. generals are saying, we have a deadlock. ) We don't have any trouble, the American side is losing. So I think adding troops will try to create a deadlock and from this point start phases for a negotiated solution. ”
A negotiated solution would evidently be welcomed by many in war - tired Afghanistan.
