The United States' special envoy for the east conflict in Ukraine, Kurt Volker, told Radio Free Europe that Washington is considering sending weapons to Ukrainian government forces fighting pro-Russian separatists.
Volker said their arming could change Moscow's approach to the former Soviet republic.
“defence weapons -- those that would enable Ukraine to defend itself and extract tanks for example -- would help stop Russia's threat to Ukraine”, Volker said.
According to him, the establishment of peace east of Ukraine requires the new strategic “dialog with Moscow”.
Volker, former US ambassador to NATO, has visited eastern Ukraine on July 23rd.
He has been appointed Washington's special representative this month in negotiations for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
Over 10,000 people have been killed since the conflict erupted in April 2014.
