The Senate, controlled by the Republicans, will make another effort next week to abolish the law on health care of former President Obama's administration, in an effort to realise one of President Trump's key promises during the campaign. While the fate of health reform is uncertain, supporters of Mr. Trump, opponents and analysts are trying to predict what will happen to his ambitious domestic policy programme.
Protests against the republican health care plan continued as republican senators went to the White House, where President Trump made a new appeal:
For seven years you promised the American people that you would abolish Obamacare. People are suffering. Disaction is not an option. ”
Health care disappointment is a political failure for the president, Molly Reynolds says:
The “especially for a president who focused a considerable part of the campaign on victory -- this is a deep loss to him”.
Republicans remain split for the way Obamacar was replaced.
But many of them want to fulfil campaign promises, says their leader in the Senate, Mitch McConnell:
There's a majority of Republican senators who want to show the American people that they will keep their promise in four election cycles to abolish Obamacare”.
Some conservatives say the plan does not change Obamacare law enough, while some moderate republics are concerned that over 20 million Americans may lose health care.
Failure to health care reform could cost the republics the control of Congress next year, says Kile Kondiku:
“especially if the level of support for the president remains 40 per cent or declines more, because historically low-support presidents have suffered losses in the House of Representatives elections”.
If Republicans do not settle their differences, they may have to work with the Democrats for a compromise, says health care expert Matthew Fiedler:
If this legislation fails, there would be an interest in two-party negotiations, in looking for some smaller changes”.
The health care effort has delayed work for other priorities of President Trump's internal policy, including another key campaign promise: reform of the tax system.
