Former Greek Minister Sentenced

Tassos Mantelis, 72, Minister of Transport and Communications in the socialist government of Costas Simitis from 1997 to 2000 was found guilty after profiting 450,000 deutschmarks (about 230,000 euros) in that period for signing a contract between Siemens and OTE, where the Greek state was at that time the main shareholder for digital passage, the AFP reports.
The court also declared a 50,000-euro fine against him.
Siemens' director in Greece at the time, Ilias Georgiou, 80, was also convicted of money laundering to 12 years in prison on bail.
