British and European envoys began Monday the first round of negotiations on Great Britain's divorce from the European Union. Both sides say it is time to talk to each other in detail.
EU leaders would like to downplay economic and social problems in Europe, while the bloc's second largest economy is trying to sever ties with the continent after four decades.
EU chief negotiator Michael Barnier will pressure British Secretary for Brex, David Davis, to accept Britain's meeting the essential and existing commitments and offer more details on its agenda.
They shook hands in front of cameras in European Commission offices before a first full session of four days of talks.
We had a good start last month, but now we're entering the core of the issue. The issue of citizens' rights, finance, division problems and, of course, Northern Ireland are the four main categories. It is very important for us to achieve progress, negotiate and identify differences in order to deal with them. Now, it's time to roll up the sleeves and make this a successful” process, British Secretary for secession David Davis said.
“We need to examine and compare our respective positions in order to achieve progress. Our negotiating groups will work on citizens' rights, financial agreement and other issues”, said EU negotiator Michael Barnier.
The two chief negotiators made no further comments and said they would inform the media Thursday after their teams closed the first four days of talks.
