An answer was given by the president of the United States himself. Trump has said ahead of the vote that Washington will probably stop funding for countries voting against it, and Albania was deployed among them.
According to CNN, at a cabinet meeting Wednesday, Trump said about the vote: “We are looking at those votes. Let's vote against us, we'll save a lot, we don't care”.
The United Nations General Assembly has voted this Thursday in favour of the draft resolution to challenge Washington's decision, with which it recognises Jerusalem's capital of Israel.
128 member states have voted in favour, between them and Albania, 35 have abstained, and 9 other countries have come against the resolution.
In an official statement distributed to the media, the Foreign Ministry clarified that Albania has held the same position as the EU countries.
Our “Vota today at the UN General Assembly reflects our unchanged position on the issue. Albania has stuck to the international consensus on Jerusalem, based on a considerable number of UN documents, including a number of Security Council resolutions, and has joined the common position of the overwhelming majority of EU member states, maintaining its co-ordination with the European Union”, the Foreign Affairs Ministry statement said.
