“I hope the sooner we have a Catalan government that is open to dialogue and can answer all the people, not just half of it,” declared Rajoy in an address to the end-of-year held Friday.
The prime minister stressed that the vote to elect the new regional president must take place within 10 days of the new parliament's meeting -- the deadline corresponding to January 27th.
As for the possibility that former Freedom Charles Puigdemont of the government from Brussels where he is in self-declared asylum, Rajoy described the idea as absurd. According to the Spanish head of state, such an issue does not need legal answers, but a response based on practical opinion.
The prime minister's announcement comes a week after the Catalan separatist parties won the majority in early elections. It was Rajoy himself who called for the development of these elections to suppress the demand of regional leaders for independence and end the political crisis. However, analysts predict the new Catalan government could take months to form.
