A severe storm has brought a record snowstorm to the city of Erie on Christmas Day, forcing officials to declare a state of emergency.

A total of 34cm (86cm) of snow covered the city and surrounding areas in the state of Pennsylvania, reports the BBC, broadcast Indexline.

Police warned drivers that the “roads are dangerous and impassable”, with a number of reported closures.

Officials say the big snowstorm is the result of the lake's effect snow when cold air combines with lake waters.
