The phone conversation comes a day after Donald Trump announced that the US recognises Jerusalem as Israel's “independent capital and will transfer the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, despite widespread international opposition.
Noting that Israel's decision to annex Jerusalem in 1980 was rejected by the international community and the United Nations, Erdogan stressed that the last step taken by the US administration would negatively affect peace and stability in the region, reports “Hurriyet Daily News”, Periscopi broadcast.
The sources added that Putin had the same views and declared he would reveal these issues to the UN Security Council.
Jerusalem remains at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with Palestinians hoping that East Jerusalem, now occupied by Israel, could serve as the capital of a future Palestinian state./Periscopi/
