In a long interview, the French version of the magazine “Philosophye Magazine” (and also translated into German editions of the magazine) Turkish writer and novelist Orhan Pamuk, among other things, speaks of the serious situation prevalent in his country.

Boris Razon from Philomag: Ten years ago you were threatened with death and prosecuted because you spoke of genocide against Armenians in 1915. The issue remains taboo in Turkey today. How about today?

Orhan Pamuk: I am happy for the economic development that Turkey has made for the past 15 years, yet without freedom of expression, the future. So you can talk about what happened in 1915 has to do with freedom of thought.

Meanwhile, we are concerned with the depression and loss of freedom. We experience terrible things. After the last stamp, over 130 thousand people were dismissed from their posts. Some of them will never get a job again. There's too many suicides. And it's hardly reported on this epidemic in the media. Over 50,000 people have been arrested. Most of them have not even been brought to trial. That's like Kafka novels.

About 170 journalists are in jail on charges of being terrorists. This is the situation, as has developed in the last three years. I'm worried and angry. Unfortunately, authoritarianism goes through much easier than I believed.

Boris Razon: Are you surprised?

Orhan Pamuk: Yes and no. However, 49% oppose the authorities. Whatever they want to impose, they will face opposition, we have to forget that.
