Once one of the main ISIS basins in Syria, this oil-rich province has been targeted since summer by two different offensives, one developed by the Syrian Democratic Forces (FDS), dominated by the Kurds and supported by Washington, the other by the Syrian army and supported by Russia.
The FDS operations area, dominated by the Kurdish-based People's Protection Units (YPG), was located east of the Euphrates, the river dividing the province of Deir Ezra in two.
On the other hand, the Syrian army continues to fight against a small group of jihadists in the western part of the river.
