In a movement convicted by most of the world, Donald Trump has announced that the US will recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. What does this contradictory movement of the American president mean for the leading actors?
The Peace Process
He has been the “at the foot of the tomb”, since the mission for peace of former US Secretary of State John Kerry failed in 2014. But the international community, except for the US, is united when it says that accepting Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, gives a fatal blow to any hope to revive peace talks. Jerusalem's status is one of the fundamental issues, which diplomats and peacemakers have said should be agreed on between the two sides in the negotiations.
Palestinians
They will see Trump's statement as the end of their hopes and requirements for East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Although few Palestinians want a return to violence, many will feel that diplomatic efforts have not drawn them to a state of their own, and will see few alternatives, in addition to direct action.
State of Israel
The Israeli government will no doubt be thrilled. Since the conquest of East Jerusalem in the 6-day war in 1967, Israel has declared the city to be the capital <x0 possible, eternal” and has sought international recognition. This will reinforce the view of many Israeli politicians, who say nothing is gained from negotiations with Palestinians. Nearly 200 thousand Israelites living in settlements in conquered East Jerusalem will also be celebrating illegally under international laws.
Region
Trump's movement will further destabilise an explosive region. Strong Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the US “is diving the region and all the ink into a flame, whose end does not appear to be”. Turkey hinted it could cut diplomatic relations with Israel if the plan moves forward. Saudis are key US allies in the region who believe this movement undermines Rlady's continued efforts to revive the peace plan. Arab border countries with Israel Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria will surely condemn the movement.
Europe
Most Western European countries will be deeply alarmed by US recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. But one important question is whether the EU will act, such as imposing the ban on imports from settlements in the West Coast, or refusing to do business with Israeli companies operating in occupied territories, thus setting out on a clearly different route from the US.
Christians in the Holy Land
The patriarch Theofilos III, widely viewed as the highest Christian figure in Jerusalem, as well as many other church leaders in the Holy Land, sent a letter to Trump today warning him of an irreparable “ ”. His “movement would promote hatred, strife, violence and suffering in Jerusalem and the Holy Land, drawing us further away from the objective of unity, and deeper toward a disastrous split”, they wrote. Church leaders will be anxious to protect the Christian lands.
The City itself
In 2015, Palestinians made up 37% of the city's population of 850 thousand. Many of them live in crowded homes and neighborhoods without being able to obtain permission for expansion or construction. Three-quarters live below the poverty line, and 25% live in neighbourhoods cut off from the rest of the city, from the partition wall. Hard to understand how Trump's movement will improve conditions for them. Nir Barkas, the mayor of the city, said yesterday that “here in Jerusalem and Israel we applaud President”, and that if people become violent, “they're going to pay the price”. / Source: The Guardian prepared: The world..
