Even the European Union delegation has joined the position of the United States of America in condemning violence during the protest of a day earlier abroad and within Albania's Parliament.
“The EU condemns violence in yesterday's protests and bringing MPs to the plenary session. Democratic processes, whether those parliamentary sessions or protests, should be allowed to develop peacefully. Albanian citizens urge their elected representatives to show leadership and responsibility, as well as to work in partnership to pursue important reforms, which are also crucial to Albania's aspirations to join the EU”, the EU delegation's response reported.
A day earlier, the United States Embassy also strongly condemned the violence that took place in Monday's protest in Tirana.
“We support citizens' right to protest peacefully, but damage to public property, launching smoking grenades in Parliament and violence are not acceptable. We call on all parties to show restraint and promote calm. The Albanian people should not be surprised that their politicians are fighting each other. This means that the Justice Reform is finally being implemented. The Vetting Commissions will soon have their first results. The attorney general who refused to prosecute politicians is gone. Soon we will see the creation of SPAK and BKH, which will investigate and prosecute corrupt high-level officials. Albanian citizens look forward to justice. And politicians are afraid of”, said the U.S. response.
