The White House has accused Russia of trying to get rid of a UN body. OPCW investigating the supposed use of chemical weapons in Syria, through an American secretary's statement.
Russia blocked a Security Council resolution drafted by the United States last Tuesday to renew the panel's mandate before the seventh report on the 2017 attack on Khan Shaykhun village and the 2016 incident in Um-Housh concluded, reports “Sputnik International” Transmission Periscope.
Russia's “attempts to undermine and eliminate JIM (Communication Mechanism) shows a dire disregard for the suffering and loss of life caused by the use of chemical weapons and a complete lack of respect for international norms”, the statement says.
The UN Organisation for the Banning of Chemical Weapons and the Joint Investigative Mechanism published its findings two days later, blaming the attack on the Syrian government. His mandate expires November 17th.
The White House said it urged the UN to renew the JIM mandate, accusing countries that “do not support its work” to stay at “directly opposed to all standards of reasonable international behaviour”.
The Russian envoy to the UN Vassily Nebenzia said the fate of the independent body, which was created by a unanimous UN Security Council vote, would be decided at the right time after the investigation is determined to be conducted professionally.
Russia's permanent mission to the United Nations criticised the report, saying it seemed more like an amateur document and was based mainly on assumptions and the selective use of facts./Periscopi/
