Albania's prime minister, Edi Rama, wants to have support from the European Union for hitting criminal gangs, benefiting from the sale of drugs, prostitution, trafficking of people and other illegal activities.
In a letter sent yesterday to 28 EU member states, Rama has written that gang leaders should be arrested and prosecuted, while any assets acquired by this criminal activity be confiscated, the AP agency from Tirana reports.
We want to have your help and bring ours in so that we can capture these people and bring them to justice”, Rama wrote, broadcast the REL.
It is estimated that crime leaders in Albania are rarely arrested and punished.
Prime Minister Rama says some of them operate in the European Union states.
Fighting organised crime and particularly drug trafficking is the main challenge for Albania, since 2009 is a NATO member and since 2014, has candidate status for EU accession.
Tirana hopes next year negotiations for accession will begin.
