Workers complain that they have neither security nor time at work as they ask the Labour Inspectorate to take action. A construction worker, tells Radio Kosovo how an associate has lost his life in the workplace.
“Four or five months ago a worker has fallen from the fourth floor, has no security equipment or any kind. The job inspector doesn't come at all, even if they come to the principal's office, they don't ask us workers anything. Security is zero, the schedule is long working 1012 hours, the worker wakes up at five, returns at 8 in the house”, he said.
The inspector in the Labour Inspectorate, Basri Ibrahimi, has told Kosovo Radio that the institution he runs is trying to create conditions for safer and healthier jobs, especially in the construction sector. Ibrahimi said that due to irregularities encountered during over 1,800 inspections this year, a total of 66 fines have been pronounced.
The inspection of work is doing everything, but unfortunately, safety and health at work are not at the level we want. We've had about 12 cases of death in this year's workplace 7 of them in the construction worker the rest of the sector that unfortunately are happening where the risk is too low, but it's happening”, he said.
According to Ibrahimi, with the support promised by the Ministry of Labour and Social Management, the safety and health of workers will be placed on top.
Refet Citaku at the company I NFRACOS, through a project on the safety and health of workers, is making efforts to bring in good work safety practices from the London Railways Institute.
We have achieved much to raise in a culture an awareness and apply all protective clothing to increase the level of security at work”, he said.
Despite the work insurance inspector's commitments, unfortunately, safety and health at work are not at the right level.
