“This shows that the rule of law functions and that those responsible for war crimes must render accounts of”, the secretary general stressed NATO, Jens Stoltenberg, in a communique.
The so-called “Balkan Kasap”, Ratko Mladic, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (TPIY), headquartered in The Hague for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
“I hope this trial will encourage the Balkan region to advance the path to peace and reconciliation”, Stoltenberg said, underlining that Mladic was convicted of inhumane crimes against civilians, especially in Srebrenica during the summer of 1995.
For his part, the European Union urged all Balkan countries to honour victims from war crimes and work in favour of peace in the region.
