As it says, Ahtisaari at the Nordic Council in Helsinki said the Catalonians “have done something foolish “, when they unilaterally declared independence, but the Spaniards too reacted sharply.
He urged Madrid to allow the dismissed Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont to return and participate in the election, writes the Serbian newspaper “Politika”, Telegrafi traces.
“Need interface. I don't know if they can lock the EU or the UN, but we shouldn't let the situation get out of control”, Ahtisaari has said.
Ahtisaari is former president of Finland and mediator of the United Nations. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2008, “for decades' commitment to mediation, peace settlement, and conflict resolution on several continents”.
Official Madrid has repeatedly rejected calls for Catalonian officials for European Union mediation or another country, suggesting that the Catalan crisis is an internal problem of Spain.
