The danger of an open political crisis has been raised due to Lebanon's fragile stability, after Saudi Arabia's ally Saad Hariri left as prime minister Saturday, blaming Iran and its Lebanese coalition Hezbollah for “sowing disputes” in the region.
The surprise move has also caused fears of a escalation in regional division between Iran and the Gulf States, primarily Saudi Arabia, with Lebanon on the front line.
Thamer al-Sabhan, Saudi minister for Gulf Affairs, said on Monday that Lebanon's government would be treated as a government declaring war in Saudi Arabia” due to what he described as “act aggression” conducted by Hezbollah.
In an interview with Al Arabiya, Sabhan said Hezbollah was involved in any <x0 terrorist activity” that threatened Saudi Arabia.
“Libanians must choose between peace or interlocking with Hezbollah,” he added, without offering details about what action Riyadi can take on Beirut.
Harry, a Sunni politician and old ally of the Saudi Arabia kingdom, announced his resignation, reports “Al Jazeera”, Periscopi broadcasts.
His decision brought about Lebanon's coalition government, which included members of Hezbollah.
“Liban is divided into two similar camps,” told “Al Jazeera”, political analyst Khaldoun El Charif.
“One is pro-Iran and the other is pro-Saud, which means if things go any worse, it could lead to a confrontation between the two parties like what happened in the past,” he added.
This is why we have to find a solution. ”
In response, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Sunday called Hariri's resignation a “decision imposed by Saudi Arabia”./Periscopi/
