The state of Suriname became known to Kosovars only after Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said this state had drawn recognition to Kosovo. The important decision had been called Belgrade, and within 24 hours Suriname became important to Kosovo. But who this state is and why among the 114 states that recognised Kosovo's independence, it would come out to attract recognition made in July 2016.
The Republic of Suriname lies on the northwest coast of the Atlantic Ocean and is the smallest state of South America with only 165,000 square miles [165,000 sq km] and the capital of Paramaribo.
With just over half a million inhabitants, Suriname represents different cultures with different languages and certain religions. Half the inhabitants belong to the Christian religion, while most speak Dutch.
Suriname was the only country colonized by the Netherlands, and until 1975 when he declared independence was part of the Netherlands Kingdom. Even after the breakup, Suriname maintained economic, cultural, and diplomatic ties with his colony.
Since then, Dutch is an official language in government, school and media in the South American state.
Suriname is one of the most culturally diverse states. Most residents speak Dutch, while there are even Indian tribes who develop their traditional life in villages.
Suriname is led by Desie Boutterse, who was a military commander and now has the second five-year term as president.
He had led the former Dutch Colonel even before as a result of two military stamps, originally in 1980-1987, and later in 1990.
In 1999, the current president was sentenced to 11 years because of smuggling 400 kilos of cocaine. He also faced charges of murder during the stake in 1980.
In April 2012, Suriname's Parliament passed a controvers law that Amnistoi Bouttersen granted him immunity from charges of military violence under his leadership, for which he would be tried.
Regarding Suriname's politics and diplomacy, what interests Kosovars who were recently talked about attracting the recognition of Kosovo, the US-South State has always had special reports with the Netherlands.
The Republic of Suriname also has good reports with the United States of America, while it is the only state where the other world superpower Russia has no embassy.
But apparently his government has decided to change sides. Suriname's top diplomat last night has paid a visit to Moscow, Serbia's friendly country.
Just on the day the visit was under way that Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called historic, Ivica Dacic came up with the news that Kosovo was deprived of a recognition.
The recognition allegedly removed, Kosovo had assured Suriname in July 2016, while the authorities of this state have not yet indicated whether they truly regretted recognition of Kosovo.
