The Special Court, which will handle cases against former KLA members, under suspicion of crimes committed during the recent war in Kosovo, is expected to give local lawyers the right to join in this process in the role of defence attorneys.
This institution's information official, Avis Benes, has said of the indexonline, that any accused in front of Kosovo's Specialised Chambers has the right to choose a protector, if the protector meets the conditions.
“In accordance with the Law for Specialised Chambers and Specialised Prosecutor's Office and Procedure and Evidence Order, any accused in front of Kosovo's Specialised Chambers has the right to choose a protector, if the defender meets the conditions. To exercise the profession before Kosovo's Specialised Chambers and to be appointed or appointed as special defender of an accused, a lawyer must meet certain criteria regarding professional preparation”, she has said.
Benes has indicated that the relevant criteria are defined in the document, dubbed Defenders' Guide, which is expected to be approved by the administration in the coming period, following the chairman's approval.
