The rescue service for Norway's north says the helicopter was on its way to Barentsburg, Svalbard's second largest settlement.
Svalbard is over 500 miles (500 km) north of Norway. It is known for its spectacular views of snow - covered mountains and glaciers.
Rescue service said the helicopter crashed 2km to 3km from Barentsburg.
Rescue service spokesman Tore Hongset told Norwegian news agency “NTB” that he had not received a signal from the helicopter pilot.
The pyramid is a former coal mining site in which Russia acquired rights about 80 years ago. It contains Vladimir Lenin's statue.
