German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today she does not expect any concrete decision to be made during the European Union's EU accession summit.
In a video message published today, Merkel says that “is important to address Union relations with Turkey”.
“However, the German government has asked the EU Commission to compile a report on the situation in Turkey, because there is a high amount of people who, in our knowledge, are unjustly imprisoned and concerned about political developments”, she said.
“Of course no decision will yet be made, but I would like to hear my colleagues' opinion on how they view bilateral relations with Turkey and what conclusions we can draw”, Merkel stressed.
The two-day EU summit will begin Thursday. The report that has been asked of the EU Commission is expected to be negative, which could increase the pressure to abandon Ankara's EU accession negotiations.
