Abe's LDP party and its coalition partner, Komeito, were set to win more than 300 seats from 465 seats in parliament, polls showed.
A powerful majority could pave the way for the Japanese leader to review the country's pacifist constitution.
Abe disbanded parliament's lower house and called for new polls last month to deal with what he called the “national crisis”, referring to an elderly population and nuclear tensions with North Korea.
The vote on Sunday was hampered throughout the country by the massive floods of an evacuation typhoon that took place in the southwest.
Sarah Clarke of “Al Jazeera”, reporting from the Japanese capital city of Tokyo. “In some of the islands, communities have been unable to vote because ships could not deliver ballot boxes to polling booths”, he said.
With a victory in a third consecutive three-year term, Abe remains on track to become Japan's longest prime minister since World War II.
