Thailand will ban smoking on some of the most popular beaches visited by tourists with the prospect of up to a year in prison for those caught in violation of the law.
The movement follows a recent survey on Phuket's Patong beach, visited by millions of foreign tourists a year, where an average of 0.76 cigarette tails were found per square metre measuring up to 101058 cigarette tails in 2.5km of the beach length.
The survey was conducted by sources of the navy and coast department that described the problem as a serious one.
The dumped cigarette plants make up one third of the remains collected from this department. <x)
When cigarettes stay under the sand for a long time, it affects the ecosystem. Then, when cigarette - tail chemicals reach water, substances that poison the natural food chain are released.
The move will take effect in November and affect 20 beaches. After a trial period, it will apply to all Thai beaches, but also in passenger and tourist boats. Anyone caught breaking the law will face a year in prison or fine.
