Iraqi state television reports that Talabani has died on 3 October at a hospital in Germany.
A close friend of the family and a senior Kurdish official in Irbil are quoted as saying Talabani died after his health condition deteriorated on October 3rd.
Talabani had suffered blows in 2012, and had been sent to a hospital in Germany for medical treatment.
Talabani, the veteran leader of the Kurds' self-rule efforts, had been elected president in 2005, two years after the US-led invasion, which ousted dictator Saddam Hussein from power.
He was the seventh president of Iraq, simultaneously the country's first president who was not Arab. Talabani left power in 2014.
