15 South Mitrovica Traffic Unit police officials have been declared innocent of charges of bribery.
These members are part of the group of 59 police officials who were arrested in December last year by the Kosovo Police Inspectorate under suspicion of acts of abuse of official duty or official authority, taking bribes and helping perpetrators of criminal acts.
At the start of the initial review, held today at the Constitutional Court of Mitrovica, Judge Avni Mehmeti told the accused that the procedure for the accused has been set up.
Therefore, sessions were held today against 15 South Mitrovica police officials, who had lost their working relationship.
All officers charged were present at the session: Ahmet Hasani, Arton Bimbashi, Avdi Beqiri, Avni Mehmeti, Bojan Saviq, Destan Rrecaj, Esat Haxhiu, Halit Shabani, Jovica Trajkovik, Nazim Hamiti, Rushit Hoti, Sabit Hajdari, Sedat Hadzimehmeteti, Slavisa Spasac and Zeki Shala.
Although lawyers Ruzhdi Maloku, Shefqe Ibrahimi and Zivojin Jokanovic were absent, and since the session was the initial review of indictee Slavisa Spasac, Sahir Hajdari and Bojan Savic declared they are willing to continue the session even without the presence of defence lawyers.
Each of the officers and accusers was declared alone, except that they do not feel guilty about charges brought upon them.
After that, Judge Avni Mehmeti announced to the parties that the second review would not be held, but the parties would be given the possibility of rejecting the indictment and testing in the 30-day term, as well as the decision concerning the opposition if it would take it out of the court hearing.
According to the indictment, these police officials have been bribed by criminals in traffic in exchange for not declaring fines.
That way, these policemen allegedly benefited from their pocket and caused damage to Kosovo's budget.
This indictment includes 20 members of the Highway Control Unit suspected of bribery.
Another 20 come from the Traffic Unit in Mitrovica and North, 15 from the South Mitrovica Traffic Unit and 4 others from the Traffic Unit in Prizren.
