Puidgemont and his ministers were dismissed from office Friday with Spanish government's decision
The cataglans-resistant leader, Carles Puigdemont, has called for “democratic resistance” to the official Madrid decision.
He condemned the suspension of Catalonia's autonomy and promised it would continue to work “to build a free country”.
Puigdemont made his appeal in a recorded television speech naming the declaration of independence Friday as “a democratic and civil sensitivity”
He said that the actions of the ruling government conflict with the will expressed by citizens of his “country, who know very well that in a democracy the institution parliament chooses or dismisses presidents.
The Spanish government has stripped Catalonia of autonomy and taken over the chairmanship of its government. Earlier, the Madrid Ministry of Interior took control of the Catalan police forces after dismissing its directors from office.
On Friday, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced the merger of the regional parliament and the dismissal of Puigdemont as his leader, as well as holding early regional elections.
In a state bulletin, Catalonia control has been handed over to Deputy Prime Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria. Meanwhile, a large manifestation of Spain's “Unity and Constitution” has been held this Saturday in Madrid.
