Thousands of workers in Barcelona and other cities staged protests against the National Court's decision in Madrid to keep Jordi Ciixart and Jordi Sanchez behind bars on charges of organising the uprising.
Hundreds of protesters singing “Pressure is no solution” gathered outside the Catalan regional government offices in central Barcelona.
Meanwhile, the Constitutional Court of Spain on 17 October ruled that the law adopted in Catalonia, which opened the way for the independence referendum on October 1st, was not valid.
The court said in a statement that its 12 judges “unilaterally” had declared unconstitutional the referendum law.
Madrid has given Catalan leader Charles Puigdemont respite until October 19th to clarify whether he will declare independence after the referendum, in which 90 per cent of the Catalans voted for independence, though turnout was only 43 per cent.
