The study only examined predictions for the state of Victoria and New South Wales, but researchers said the rest of Australia could also face similar temperatures.

Sydney reached a record 45.8 degrees Celsius in 2013, while Melbourne hit 46.4 degrees Celsius in 2009, the National Bureau of Meteorology said.
