Gitanjali Rao was chosen the winner among 10 finalists who had worked for three months with scientists to develop their ideas.
The young girl's device uses carbon nanotubes to detect the presence of lead in the water, which she does almost every second while the actual methods cost much and include sending the champion to the laboratory to analyze.
Thousands of US water systems have reportedly been contaminated by lead and the invention of Gitanjali was inspired by a similar crisis in Flint, Michigan, where local officials are being indicted for water pollution.
Its device is called “Tetis”, according to the Greek water goddess, and through a sensor connected to a mobile app, it reads almost instantly and quite accurately the amount of lead in the water, it transmits its toch.
The young girl said she wants to improve the equipment so she can sell to the public. Besides valuing as U.S. top scientist for 2017, she received a $250,000 reward.
