EU fines Google at 890m euros

The European Union has imposed Google with an 890m-euro fine for violating EU digital regulations. According to the European Commission, the company favoured its research engine and Google Play apps store, damaging competition.

Digital Affairs Commissioner Henna Virkkenn said Google has not given rival businesses the same visibility at Google Serch and has limited app developers to offer customers cheaper alternatives outside Google Play.

The European Commission warned that Google could face other fines if it does not comply with EU rules.

Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera said products should succeed because of their quality and not because they are favoured by the company controlling the search engine. She added that consumers should be able to be informed of better offers.

The EU considers Google and the mother Alphabet company as a <x0Wgateper" ( Digital Scholar) along with companies such as Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft and ByteDance, which control consumers' access to digital markets.

Google leader Kent Walker criticised the decision, saying the fine would harm useful research functions and weaken the protection of users at Google Play.

The EU has been strengthening rules for years to limit the power of large technological companies. In 2018, Google was fined 4.3 billion euros for abuse of the Android system's dominant position.

Recently, the EU has taken measures against other technological companies as well, fined AliExpress for violating security regulations and warning Meta of changing the so-called"idsaint variations"on Facebook and Instagram. /Telegraphy/
